Hexlox basics & safety

How does Hexlox work?

The Hexlox is a small stainless steel insert that fits into the existing magnetic (steel) hex bolts on your bike, so you don't have to replace any of your bolts. By inserting the Hexlox, you block access to the hex bolt.

Your Hexlox is paired with a randomly coded Hexlox key, so only you can lock and unlock your bike part.

Hexlox can protect virtually every part of your bike - wheels, saddle and seatpost, handlebars and stem, pedals, lights and more with a sleek and almost weightless solution.

What is a Hexlox Insert?

Our main product is an insert for securing existing bolts (hexagon socket/Allen key) on bicycles. These inserts are very small, allowing them to be inserted into the sockets of the bolts. The inserts are also called 'Hexlox inserts.' Hexlox inserts are available in sizes 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm.

Please note! Hexlox works in magnetic (steel) bolts. If your bolt is non-magnetic (stainless steel, titanium, aluminum) and you insert a Hexlox, it won't work (because the Hexlox will eventually fall out). In this case, simply replace your non-magnetic bolt with a regular steel bolt, or use the Hexlox for non-magnetic bolts.

Can't I get the Hexlox Insert out with a large magnet?

No. You can't remove the Hexlox Insert with a magnet.
We played with the polarity and shielded the magnet from the outside. The Hexlox is held in place by a very small magnet, but the wrench doesn't use magnetic force to remove the Hexlox—there's a mechanical connection. We even made a video on the subject:

Will the Hexlox Insert fit my bolts?

Yes, all bolts on your bike are secured using one of three hex key sizes. Hexlox inserts are available in these three standard sizes: 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm hex key sizes.

To determine the required size, insert an Allen key into the bolt; the size is engraved on the side of the Allen key. The key can be used to open all three sizes.

How do the Hexlox Key and the Hexlox Key Code work?

The Hexlox Key and the Hexlox Insert – if they have the same code – form a solid mechanical connection. This is only possible thanks to ultra-precise engineering and manufacturing "Made in Germany." The shape of the key matches the shape of the Hexlox exactly – but only if they have the same 3-digit code.

Different key codes mean that the keys and inserts have slightly different shapes.

That's why we call the Hexlox Key a "key," because it essentially works the same way as your front door key. If you take a close look at another Hexlox key with a different code, you'll notice that the tip of the key looks a little different—not much, but you can tell...

Can I remove the hexlox with a large magnet?

No. The Hexlox Insert cannot be removed with a magnet.

We played with the polarity and shielded the magnet from the outside. The Hexlox is held in place by a very small magnet, but the Hexlox Key doesn't use magnetic force to bond with the Hexlox—there's a mechanical connection. We even made a video on the subject: Can a Magnet Remove Hexlo?

Please note! Hexlox works with magnetic (steel) screws. If your screw is non-magnetic (stainless steel, titanium, aluminum) and you insert a Hexlox, this will not work (as the Hexlox will eventually fall out). In this case, simply replace your non-magnetic screw with a regular steel screw, or use Hexlox for Non-Magnetic Bolts.

Can a thief use pliers to loosen a screw and steal parts even if Hexlox is installed?

Most screws sit in a recess, protecting them from being grasped with pliers. However, if your screw head is exposed and protruding, the outside of the head can be clamped with pliers. If this is the case, let us know, and we'll send you our special tapered head screws. Please let us know the thread diameter and the length of the screw.

Please note! Hexlox works with magnetic steel screws. If your screw is non-magnetic (stainless steel, titanium, aluminum), Hexlow will not work. In this case, simply replace your non-magnetic screw with a regular steel screw or use Hexlox for non-magnetic screws.

Screws, sizes and assembly

Does Hexlox fit my bike?

The short answer: Yes!

It doesn't matter what bike you have - Hexlox can secure any saddle, almost any wheel (Hexlox doesn't currently work on fat bikes - the axles are too long) and many other bike parts.

I checked my screws with a magnet, and my screws aren't magnetic. Will Hexlox work?

Hexlox works in magnetic screws (steel). If you want to protect a non-magnetic screw, you need our Hexlox for non-magnetic screws.

My screws are rusty – will hexlox work?

Yes, our installation instructions cover this. Excess rust and dirt must be removed, and an Allen wrench must fit freely and easily into the screw. We also recommend that you avoid riding around with rusty parts 😉

Will Hexlox rust or seize up?

No, we use the highest quality 316 stainless steel.

Like all bicycle parts, however, Hexlox requires minimal maintenance. Remove the Hexlox from time to time and clean the socket of dirt and grime. Add a drop of oil to the socket. Done.

We even made a video about it – check it out here.

General questions

What problem does Hexlox solve?

Hex bolts are used to secure bicycle parts like saddles, seatposts, stems, handlebars, pedals, and more. Unfortunately, anyone with an Allen key can simply unscrew the bolt and steal your part.

Hexlox has a simple and elegant solution for this. By inserting the Hexlox into the screws, you block access to the screw.

My bike isn't that valuable - why should I install Hexlox?

Even if your bike isn't particularly valuable or doesn't have any expensive parts, it's still annoying if something gets stolen.

You know what we mean if you've ever tried riding home bareback. 😉

We also believe that most people would rather avoid filing a police report, contacting their insurance company, or buying new parts.

In the end, the question is: How much is your own time worth to you?

How did Hexlox come about?

Before Hexlox launched through a Kickstarter campaign in 2016, our founders spent several years perfecting the design and concept.

Our goal is to offer a balanced combination of high quality, excellent customer service and competitive prices.
